Please note for 2010......

The BMBO [British Mountain Bike Orienteering] have replaced the old TCA [Trail Cyclists Association] as the governing body for MTB orienteering events.
Please note that ALL our events count as MBO Score events: This means that you have a fixed time limit and controls are worth a varying number of points.

BMBO have a new web site and the same arrangements exist as for previous years - i.e. ALL competitors taking part must be either full or associate members.
Associate Membership is FREE but must be completed online.

If you previously registered in 2009 you will have to refresh your membership by going to the BMBOweb site - but you should be able to retain your old TCA number.

It only takes a minute to do.... otherwise I will have to charge you an extra £2 admin fee to provide you with day insurance.

Please could you also bring along your associate membership number on the day. This will help to spped up the registration process.

Note: The registration process will send you an email. You must respond to this within 24 hours for the associate membership to be confirmed. If you do not do this, it is not valid - if you are not on the master list (that I usually download the day before the event, then you will have to pay the extra - sorry.

Start times from 09:30 to 10:00.

Choice of two courses : 3-Hour or 5-Hour MTB Orienteering. Based around the Sulby area.
HQ is at Sulby Village Hall - Grid ref : SC 380 946.  This is about 150 metres to the North side of the Sulby Crossroads (next to the Sulby Inn) off the main A3 (TT Course) Peel to Ramsey road.

There is a reasonable amount of parking behind the village hall.  If you park on the road, please have  consideration for local residents.  An alternative would be to park at the Sulby Claddagh and ride in - just a short ride required.

Controls will be sited around the trail network and will be identified by orange tape.
There will be 30 controls worth a varying number of points.   Not all of the controls will be live for the 3-hour event.

You may compete either solo or as a team of two.  Generation Teams (Parent + Offspring) are encouraged.  See the categories (below) for details of age classes.
Each solo/team combination should ride with a mobile phone for safety reasons. Teams must ride together at all times.

Both team members will be issued with si-cards [dibbers] and must dib within one minute of each other for the control to count.

The time limit will be 3 or 5 hours - after which penalties will be applied.

Entry Fees:
Solo = £12, Team =£20. Includes one A3 pre-printed map.

  General MBO Hints & Tips......

MBO (formerly known as Trailquest] is basically "Orienteering on Bikes". You have a fixed time to visit as many control points as possible before getting back to the finish.
It sounds simple - but the controls are all worth a different number of points - so it is a challenge to plan the most effective route in the time available - it's fun !

If you are late (i.e. over the time allowed, penalty points will be deducted as follows;
1-5 minutes late = 1 point per minute
5-10 mins late = 2pts/minute
11-15 mins late = 5pts/minute
16-30 mins late = 10pts/minute
Over 30 minutes late = No score! Bad news - so you don't want to be this late....

You will be provided with an A3 colour pre-printed map that has all the checkpoints marked on it. You are advised to bring a waterproof map case in case it is wet.

BMBO rules suggest that you pack a whistle & compass as well as normal tools etc. You should carry these as an additional safety aid.
You can visit as many checkpoints as you like - and in any order.
Mobile Phones: Please carry your mobile with you whilst on the event. At times you may be in remote areas and your mobile is your best bet for summoning assistance and/or informing us if you are in trouble. Put your mobile number on the entry sheet & make sure that it is turned on. Also make a note of the emergency contact number - 07624-473589. This is shown on the map as well.
It is a good idea to mount a map holder on the handlebars. But you should take extra care when reading the map on the move!
Otherwise, you can just consult the map when you need to.

The entry fee is £12 for solo riders. You can also ride as a team of 2 in which case the entry fee for each team is £20. Teams will be issued with a single map but you may purchase additional maps at £1 each if you require.
Teams will now be issued with a pair of dibbers - and must both dib at a checkpoint for it to count. They must also dib within one minute of each other! If ou exceed the 1-minute limit between team punches then you will only be credited with 50% of the score for that checkpoint!

You MUST return to the finish if you retire. This is both to let us know that you are safe - and also to return your SPORTident electronic tag (dibber).

If you know you are going to be late back (e.g. over 30 minutes late) please let us know - otherwise we may have to contact search & rescue services - and this could mean that others have to come out looking for you.

Do not lose your dibber - you will be charged a replacement fee of £30 if you lose them. They can be attached on either a neck lanyard or on a wristband (provided). Teams will use non-removable Tyvek wristbands!
Younger riders: Trailquest is a mixture of riding on tracks and road. Riders under 16 are welcome to take part - but must do so accompanied by a parent or guardian
(i.e. riding as a team of 2).
