Manx End to End Challenge 2002 - Results

Thursday 5th September 2002.

Well done to all who entered and we hope you had a good ride. . .

Local riders should get themselves a copy of the Manx Independent this week as they have kindly featured the E2E in a magnificent double page colour spread - thanks to all the guys at IoM Newspapers!
For the benefit of the non-Manx riders I will ask them if we can reproduce the write-up and pictures on the web site.

As we sat outside the Queens on Douglas Prom on Sunday night, news reached us that the Liverpool Sea-Cat was delayed up to 4 hours. Commiserations to any of you who were delayed by this and we hope that you got home safely in the end.

I would like to include thanks to ALL the helpers who made the event possible;

  The guys at Bike Style For continuing to support the event, providing the prizes and giving me loads of encouragement.
  My family Who manned Checkpoint 1, handled the admin, did the timekeeping and helped keep me sane!  They may not have succeeded on the latter . . .
  The Horton Family Who manned checkpoint 2 and shouted encouragement to all of you - even though the hardest bit was yet to come!
  Paul Thornton & family Who came over to ride the event and ended up working as hard as us, as well as manning checkpoint 3, loading the bikes and telling me not to panic!
  Robin Skuse Who helped mark the course, did the timekeeping and designed those excellent T-shirts (we still have a few left if you fancy another one)!
  Dave Maddrell & Andy Smith For marking Ballaugh to Brandywell from Andy's sidecar outfit.
  Geoff Eldridge and Stewart Walker from Polaris Who came all the way over here to help with marshalling, sweeping and clearing the course afterwards.
  Russell & Kevin The motorcycle paramedics who kept a watchful eye on you all and were there in case you fell off!
  Paul Chappell Who once again shepherded everyone across the TT course at Ballig.
  Jim Cottier, Steve Shimmin, Tony Varley, James Bishop & Brian Wilkinson Who turned out to help with the marshalling along the course, ferried people around and generally helped to keep things moving.
  Trans Mann For providing the truck for all the bikes and driving ever so carefully!
  Tours Isle of Man For providing the coach, despite threatening to make you all walk up to Cregneash!
  Sound Cafe For providing the teas and putting up with the smell!
  DAFF For owning large amounts of fantastic scenery and letting us ride all over it!
  All the landowners and tenants along the route For being extremely tolerant of us and allowing us to use the trails each year.
  Mr Kermeen at Balklacraine Farm For letting us use his quad bike trails.

Apologies to anyone who got lost around the Surby area. When we cleared the course, a crucial marker seemed to have been removed and, despite our best efforts, several people went astray at this point. We did ask permission to paint directional arrows on the road but this was denied. The green dots seemed to be pretty effective but, in coming off the hill, it was not obvious to some that the final few miles were marked in this way. If you took a wrong route then please accept my apologies and we will strive to find more effective ways of marking the awkward road sections next time.  Over the entire route there are several hundred markers of various descriptions and it only takes a couple to go missing to cause a problem.  Next time, I may produce a sketch map and/or written instructions of the final section on the web site for you to print off and carry with you. That way, you can carry additional confirmation. Suggestions, please!
